Recognizing Black History Month!

San Bruno Park School District is recognizing Black History Month this February. This month provides an important opportunity to honor the achievements, contributions, and rich cultural heritage of Black Americans throughout history. It is a time to reflect on the struggles and triumphs that have shaped our nation and to celebrate the resilience, creativity, and leadership of the Black community.

We encourage students, staff, and families to actively engage in learning and reflection during this month. Exploring history, sharing stories, and participating in conversations about equity and social justice help us foster a more inclusive and understanding community. Black History Month is not only a time to look back at the past but also a chance to inspire positive change and advocate for equity today.

To support educators and families in this journey, the California Teachers Association (CTA) offers a wealth of resources, including lesson plans, educational materials, and ideas for classroom activities to explore Black history and culture in meaningful ways. You can access these resources here: CTA Black History Month Resources.

Let us come together as a community in recognizing, honoring, and celebrating the contributions of Black Americans, and continue to cultivate an environment of inclusivity, awareness, and respect for all.

Summer Programs!

San Bruno is excited to announce our annual summer intervention offerings.  These programs are designed for students who may benefit from additional academic support. Due to reduced funding this year, the number of available spots has unfortunately decreased.  We are prioritizing our learners who need the greatest academic support.  Our team will reach out to the families of prioritized students during the last week of February to invite them to enroll.  We will keep the community updated about the programs and open seats over the coming months.

📅 Saturday, March 7
🕡 6:30–9:00 PM
📍 San Bruno Recreation Center (RAC)

Your ticket includes a delicious dinner, plus the full evening of program and festivities. Seating is limited, and early registration is encouraged. The evening will feature stories from alumni and families, program highlights, and updates from our City, District, and San Bruno Education Foundation partners.

The exchange is made possible through a collaboration between the City of San Bruno, the San Bruno Park School District, and the San Bruno Education Foundation. With support from a three year grant from the San Bruno Community Foundation, partners are working together to ensure the program remains accessible and sustainable as community based support is rebuilt. Parent Square Update

Soon, many of the text messages you get from our school will come from regular 10-digit phone numbers. This will make it easier to see who is messaging you. For example, a message from your child’s teacher will come from a different phone number than a message from the school office.

What’s changing?

Right now, most texts come from a 5-digit number. Soon, you’ll start getting texts from different regular 10-digit phone numbers for:

• Direct messages

• Classroom and group posts

• School posts

Messages from the district, digests and alerts will still come from the 5-digit number.

What should you do?

When you receive a message from one of these new 10-digit numbers, save it to your contacts. Here are some suggestions:

• Save a teacher’s number as: Ms. Davis @ John Muir

• Save classroom/group posts as: Ms. Davis’s Class

• Save school posts number as:  John Muir School

Help Us Celebrate a 100th Birthday for a WWII Hero!

This year, Marine Corps Sergeant (Ret.) Frank Wright, a two-time Purple Heart recipient, is turning 100 years old! When asked how he wanted to celebrate, he said he’d love to receive 100,000 birthday notes and well-wishes. Sergeant Wright, who once had ties to San Mateo County and now lives in Lodi, CA, has already received 30,000 cards, and the Marine Corps is hoping for help to reach his goal.

You can help by writing a short birthday note or message. Something as simple as “Happy Birthday,” “Thank you for your service,” or “Wishing you all the best” will mean a lot. Once your note is written, just drop it in the designated collection box at the SBPSD District office.

Please have all notes completed by February 20. Let’s come together as a community to honor Sergeant Wright and make his 100th birthday truly unforgettable!

Tuberculosis Awareness

There has been recent news about small TB outbreaks throughout the region and nation.  In SBPSD, we routinely screen students for tuberculosis (TB) at enrollment and continue to monitor for any signs or symptoms throughout the school year. Attached are several informational flyers from the CDC should you wish to share or reference them.

We continue to reinforce good hand hygiene and proper cough etiquette with all students. It is also important to note that TB is an airborne illness and is not spread through touch or by sharing objects.

At this time there have been no known TB exposures or cases within the San Bruno Park School District. If you are aware of any concerns or potential exposures, please feel free to let us know.

Student-Led Conferences — Save the date!

We are excited to introduce Student-Led Conferences for all 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students this spring.

In a student-led conference, students guide their families through their learning journey by sharing examples of their work, reflecting on progress toward goals, and identifying next steps. This process builds student ownership, confidence, and accountability, while giving families meaningful insight into their child’s growth.

When students explain their successes, challenges, and goals in their own words, it leads to deeper understanding and more meaningful conversations between students, families, and teachers.

Student-Led Conference Dates:

• Elementary (Grades 4–6): Week of March 23

• Middle School: Wednesday, March 25

Student-led conferences are also a meaningful way to bring our Learner Profile to life by highlighting reflection, goal-setting, and personal responsibility.

Additional details will be shared as the dates approach. We look forward to this important experience and appreciate your partnership in supporting student learning.
